Nike Superstore)
Nike and Sweatshops:
`Despite publicly admitting that their work conditions
for workers need to be drastically improved, Nike has done little to change
this. A global campaign against Nike has proven that by taking to
the street we can make Nike listen and expose their exploitative practices.
Nike's contractors and staff exploit and abuse factory
workers in South East Asia and Australia. In a first world county
like Australia, workers are paid as little as two dollars an hour.
Workers in Indonesia are paid as little as two dollars a day.
In an effort to stamp out any struggle for decent working
conditions, Nike conducts anti-union campaigns to prevent workers organising.
Nike refuses to sign the `homeworkers code of practice' and uses child
labour to produce shoes, paying them as little as twenty cents an hour
in China.
Workers are often exposed to toxic chemicals and fumes,
have no safety training and are sacked if they try and organise collectively
in unions. Nike workers in Vietnam cannot go to the bathroom more
than once every eight hours.'
Action you can take:
JUST STOP IT.
Protest against Nike every Friday from 5pm

For at least eight weeks in a row, people have faced police
intimidation and violence and successfully blockaded the Nike superstore
on Friday nights. In an effort to tell people about the sweatshops
behind the logo we encourage anyone outraged by Nike's infamous rocord
of human rights abuses to get involved. Join the growing number of
people every Friday night in our democratic right to announce our disgust
at Nike and corporate tyranny. |
